Theme

The reference material for this helicopter is from the first few pages of Akira Vol. 4. I found the opening sequence evocative, and the helicopter itself has an interesting design, so I thought it would make a great subject to model.

Process

No kit is available for this vehicle, so I made the model from scratch using laser cut, 3d printed, vacuum formed and kit-bashed parts. This involved a lengthy design phase using Rhino 3D to create a digital model.

The paint is airbrushed acrylic with oil washes, and laser cut airbrushed stencilling. Some small decals from various other kits were used. The rotors and cockpit seating were taken from a 1984 matchbox Chinook kit. The canopy was vacuum-formed.
